Sustainability

Our Position

Collective Intelligence is a professional services firm operating at the intersection of artificial intelligence and organisational strategy. We recognise that the AI systems we advise on, build, and deploy consume significant energy and material resources — and that our own operations carry an environmental footprint we are responsible for managing.

We believe that building the future of intelligence operations must go hand in hand with building a more sustainable world. This statement sets out our current commitments and the direction of travel we are committed to.

Our Environmental Commitments

We are committed to measuring and understanding the carbon footprint of our operations, including energy use associated with cloud computing, AI inference, travel, and office activities. We aim to establish a baseline measurement by the end of 2026 and set science-based reduction targets thereafter.

Where possible, we select cloud and infrastructure providers that operate on renewable energy or that have credible, verified net-zero commitments. We factor environmental considerations into our procurement decisions and favour suppliers who share our sustainability values.

We minimise unnecessary travel by conducting client engagements, research, and team collaboration digitally by default. Where travel is required, we select lower-emission options and offset unavoidable emissions through independently verified programmes.

AI and Energy

We are acutely aware that large language models and AI systems require substantial computational resources. As practitioners in this field, we take seriously our responsibility to advise clients on energy-efficient AI deployment, avoid wasteful over-engineering, and promote right-sized models appropriate to the task at hand.

In our own work, we select AI tools and platforms thoughtfully, with energy efficiency as one criterion alongside capability and cost. We advocate within the industry for greater transparency around the energy costs of frontier model training and inference.

Governance and Reporting

Sustainability is a standing agenda item for our leadership team. We review our environmental performance annually and publish updates to this statement as our commitments evolve and mature.

We welcome dialogue with clients, partners, and prospective employees on our sustainability approach. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact us at hello@collectiveintelligence.co.
